My mentors from the ’45 generation are individuals who have served as field leaders, combat force commanders, and military leaders. They have imparted valuable lessons that have shaped my personality in five key ways. Firstly, their unwavering Patriotism, as they exhibited a deep love for the homeland that never wavered with age. Secondly, their Confidence, which they exuded in their actions and decisions. Thirdly, their commitment to Intellect, as they were lifelong learners who sought knowledge beyond their own expertise. Fourthly, their Good Sense of Humor, which helped them connect emotionally with their subordinates and troops. Lastly, their Flexibility, as they were not strictly bound by rigid protocols.
As a young officer, I had the privilege of learning from many individuals of the ’45 generation, who were key figures in the independence war and early days of the Republic of Indonesia. During that time, the survival of the Republic was uncertain, with limited resources and a formidable enemy. The success of the nation rested on the sacrifices and determination of the Indonesian people from diverse backgrounds who chose to fight for independence.
As a cadet at the Armed Forces Academy, I had the opportunity to interact with prominent figures from the ’45 generation, including members of my own family. My grandfather, Margono Djojohadikusumo, played a significant role in the independence struggle, as did my uncles who made the ultimate sacrifice in battle. Their commitment to the nation’s sovereignty and honor left a lasting impression on me.
The spirit of the ’45 generation, characterized by a drive for independence, respect, and prosperity, was instilled in me from a young age. Growing up in a family of freedom fighters and being exposed to influential figures from that era shaped my values and beliefs. I witnessed firsthand the struggles and sacrifices made by those who fought for Indonesia’s freedom.
