Not only is Pak Tono an exceptional fencing athlete, but he is also a skilled marksman and proficient swimmer. It is rare to find someone who excels in both freefall parachuting and diving, as Pak Tono does. As a member of the Frogmen Force (Pasukan Katak), he has also demonstrated his prowess in karate. He exemplifies the qualities of an exemplary Army Officer and serves as an inspiration for his men and future generations.
When I was appointed as the Minister of Defence, I sought a suitable candidate to serve as the principal of Taruna Nusantara High School. I approached Pak Tono Suratman and asked, ‘Would you be willing to take on the role of Principal at Taruna Nusantara?’
‘I am willing’, responded Pak Tono. His unwavering patriotism is truly remarkable. Despite having served as the Army Chief of Staff’s security assistant and as the PANGDAM of Kalimantan, Pak Tono chose to retire and dedicate himself to the role of principal at Taruna Nusantara High School.
Tono Suratman is one year my junior, yet we share a bond that transcends age. During our bachelor days, he often stayed at my parents’ house in Kebayoran Baru, on Jalan Kertanegara number 4, becoming like a younger brother to me. As a Company Commander (DANKI) and Platoon Commander (DANTON) 1 respectively, we were deployed to East Timor together. His exceptional performance as a field officer during our time in Nanggala 28 left a lasting impression on me.
From his early days as a cadet, Pak Tono demonstrated a keen interest in sports, excelling in fencing, swimming, and shooting. His exceptional abilities led him to excel in KOPASSUS, where he was eventually appointed as Commander of the KOPASSUS Para-Commando group 1 and later as Commander of KOPASSUS Education and Training Center (PUSDIKPASSUS).
His leadership extended to leading the Rajawali task force, comprised of elite companies trained in anti-guerrilla tactics. The effectiveness of this task force in combat operations in East Timor exemplifies Pak Tono’s dedication and expertise in military operations.
Furthermore, Pak Tono’s proficiency in various sports, including fencing, shooting, swimming, and martial arts, highlights his well-rounded skill set. His ability to excel in freefall parachuting, diving, and karate further underscores his versatility as a military officer and role model for future generations.
As Minister of Defence, I recognized the importance of enhancing the educational standards at Taruna Nusantara High School, under the stewardship of Pak Tono. His willingness to serve as the school’s principal, despite his illustrious military career, speaks volumes about his dedication to shaping future leaders for the nation.
Pak Tono’s leadership qualities and commitment to education make him a valuable asset in grooming outstanding students who will contribute significantly to Indonesia’s future. His selfless dedication to the role of principal at Taruna Nusantara High School exemplifies his patriotism and serves as a shining example for all.
In my estimation, Pak Tono’s exceptional abilities make him a suitable candidate for leadership roles within Indonesia’s Special Forces and KOSTRAD, surpassing even my own capabilities as a commando officer.
