Importance of Supporting a Free Nutritious Meal Policy Based on Prophet’s Teachings, According to Istiqlal Grand Imam

Jakarta — Prof. Dr. KH. Nasaruddin Umar, the Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque and Rector of the Quranic Sciences University Jakarta, has expressed his strong support for President-elect Prabowo Subianto’s initiative to provide free nutritious meals for school children. Nasaruddin highlighted the significance of ensuring proper nutrition for children, emphasizing its basis in Islamic teachings.

“The concept of offering nutritious meals to young children in schools is extremely important and deserving of our backing. Many Hadiths remind us of the importance of providing adequate nutrition to children, particularly during their cognitive development phase,” Nasaruddin stated to the press on Saturday (May 12).

He noted that such a policy should have been put into place earlier, but he welcomed its introduction now, stating that it is never too late to initiate something beneficial.

“Alhamdulillah, it is never too late to support a noble cause. As the Grand Imam, I frequently emphasize in the media the vital importance of paying special attention to children, particularly in terms of nutrition,” he remarked.

Recalling how Prophet Muhammad Shalallahu Alaihi Wassalam placed great emphasis on caring for children, Nasaruddin mentioned that the free meal policy is both Islamic and religious in nature.

“Prophet Muhammad Shalallahu Alaihi Wassalam paid close attention to children. For example, according to Mu’awiyah bin Abi Sufiyah, the Prophet advised that children should learn to pray from the age of seven, and even instilled discipline by the age of ten. This underscores the importance of nurturing children’s development—whether it is their nutrition, education, or parental care,” Nasaruddin elaborated.

Additionally, the Grand Imam pointed out that this policy could offer a solution for orphaned and neglected children who may lack access to adequate nutrition.

“Once again, the Quran reminds us of the duty to look after orphans. A raaitalladzii yukadzdzibu biddiin fadzaalikalladzii yadu’ul yatiim,” Nasaruddin quoted, referring to a verse that emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the well-being of orphans.

Nasaruddin’s support for the free nutritious meal policy reflects its strong connection to Islamic values, prioritizing the welfare and comprehensive development of children. (RR)
