Indonesia, with a population of nearly 280 million, currently ranks as the fourth most populous country in the world.
However, with an annual population growth rate of 1.1%, Indonesia is projected to be surpassed by Nigeria in terms of population size in the near future.
By 2045, Indonesia is expected to have a population of 324 million, an increase of 44 million people over the next 20 years—equivalent to adding a province the size of West Java.
As the global and Indonesian populations grow, there is a need for a 56% increase in food production to meet the needs of an estimated world population of 10 billion by 2050. This will require expanding agricultural land by an area twice the size of India. Ensuring food security for all will be a significant challenge.
With population growth and climate change, countries will prioritize their own food production, emphasizing the importance of Indonesia achieving food self-sufficiency.
Additionally, there is a need to create job opportunities, establish educational institutions, healthcare facilities, sanitation infrastructure, housing, and other supporting systems to improve the quality of life for all Indonesians. This is a substantial task that needs to be addressed.
