The Essence of Unity in Diversity at the 2024 Paris Paralympics: A Stunning Collection by Didiet Maulana

The Indonesian Paralympic team is gearing up for the 2024 Paris Paralympics, scheduled to begin on August 28, 2024. One of the crucial elements being finalized for the event is the design of costumes to be worn by the Indonesian contingent. While Didit Hediprasetyo designed the costumes for the 2024 Paris Olympics, this time, designer Didiet Maulana and his brand, IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana, have taken on the task.

The costumes are deeply inspired by the concept of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity), which is a fundamental principle in Indonesian culture. Collaborating with Mills, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora), and the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia (NPC), Didiet Maulana has created a collection that includes jackets, jerseys, and track pants. The design not only focuses on aesthetics but also aims to embody the values of unity and diversity of the Indonesian nation.

The design series, named “Sandya Niskala,” draws inspiration from traditional ikat weaving, representing the diverse Indonesian culture. The geometric patterns in the design symbolize the dynamic ocean waves of the archipelago, reflecting the athletes’ struggle and optimism in competition. Additionally, motifs inspired by the Garuda Pancasila are incorporated into the design to symbolize strength, unity, and solidarity.

The colors used in the costumes were carefully chosen to convey deep meanings, with red symbolizing courage, white purity, gold grandeur and glory, and gray responsibility. The placement of motifs on the costumes creates a dynamic effect reminiscent of the beak of the Garuda Pancasila.

To celebrate the launch of the collection, a photo session was held with Indonesian Paralympians participating in the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The session aimed to highlight the spirit and dedication of the athletes representing Indonesia on the global stage.

Didiet Maulana hopes that the “Sandya Niskala” collection will symbolize unity and diversity while inspiring and empowering the athletes as they compete. The collection will be available for purchase through Mills coinciding with the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympic Games.

Both Didiet Maulana and Didit Hediprasetyo have made significant contributions to designing costumes that not only serve a functional purpose but also carry deep meanings of pride and unity for Indonesia on the international stage.
